San Antonio is feeling the effects of a wave of layoffs across Texas. Defense contractor TechWerks announced the loss of 87 jobs after its subcontract with the Defense Health Agency was not renewed.

What Happened?

TechWerks, long involved in defense health IT services, faced contract changes that impacted local positions. The layoffs are part of a larger trend across Texas, with other industries also reporting cuts.

Why This Matters in Military City U.S.A.

As Military City USA, San Antonio’s economy is closely tied to Department of Defense contracts. When contract shifts happen, local jobs, families, and even housing demand are impacted.

Real Estate Impact

While San Antonio’s housing market remains stable, job losses can create localized effects:

  • Some families may be forced to sell homes quickly
  • Rental demand may increase as workers transition careers
  • Homebuyers may find opportunities in areas near military bases

Long term, San Antonio remains resilient thanks to its diverse economy beyond defense—healthcare, cybersecurity, and biosciences continue to expand.
